The RLSS UK and the IQL UK have commissioned a ‘Life Changing Event’ DVD in association with Quality Leisure Management Ltd. The DVD has been sponsored by Walker Morris and The Swimming Pool Safety Company.
A ‘Life Changing Event’ is a powerful new training resource for Managers and Lifeguards focussing on the aftermath of a swimming pool fatality. The DVD recreates a fictitious pool rescue which is unsuccessful. After the incident the scene switches to Court where the organisation is being prosecuted under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974. After the expert gives their opinion on the underlying failings of the organisation, the main focus is on the cross examination of both pool manager and lifeguard.
The final section of the DVD is an interview with Penny and Terry Matthews, whose son Nathan drowned in 2004. Penny and Terry are not actors, but are parents with five other children who live with the loss and life changing event of the death of their son through drowning.
The DVD will be supplied with guidance notes for trainers and the DVD has been created in such a way that it can viewed from start to finish but also in individual sections to reinforce training requirements and standards.
Tara Dillon, Executive Director of IQL UK, “I wish I had had this when I was an operator. I am asked daily about how we can stop lifeguards talking whilst performing lifeguard duties. Historically I have been unable to provide a training tool to assist operators in answering this question until now. This is the best solution to that question that I have come across. Reinforcing the need for employees to perform their duties as per the defined guidance is essential. Everyone knows what should be done - the key issue is doing it! We hope that the ‘Life Changing Event’ DVD will assist Operators, Manager’s, Approved Training Centre’s and Trainer Assessor’s to achieve this. A key message is that in the DVD everyone meant well and nobody wanted the incident to happen, but complacency cost a life and changed everyone’s life, not just the bereaved family. If you want a training tool that will assist you in reducing near misses at your workplace then order your copy of ‘A Life Changing Event’ DVD”
Peter Mills, Managing Director at QLM, “This DVD is an invaluable tool for Managers and Lifeguards. Everyone means well when it comes to safety but sometimes when we look back on tragedies it is clear that complacency has been a contributory factor. This DVD provides an insight into what happens when employees appear in court and the impact it has on them. We hope it will drill into pool operators the importance of following guidelines - which in turn will prevent more of them falling into similar situations.”
Objectives
The objective of this DVD and training pack is to:
- Demonstrate how failure to plan and to carry out straightforward duties such as risk assessment, training and lifeguarding can result in tragic consequences.
- Demonstrate that these heartbreaking events change not only the lives of the bereaved and the victim, but also the employees own lives.
- Demonstrate the impact on managers, supervisors and front line staff of such an incident.
- Demonstrate how a typical courtroom scene in a criminal prosecution of an organisation under the Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 would be conducted.
- Ensure that staff who are involved in providing a service to the public understand how their actions can affect others.
- Demonstrate how a death or major injury to a member of the public or an employee can be a life changing event for everyone.
The DVD shows No link with any real incident is intended and if perceived is entirely accidental. Whilst the scenario is not strictly true to the protocol of the courtroom, the principles are based on reality.
